I WAS HAVING A WONDERFUL dream involving Harry, me, and a tropical island where there was nary a chance of getting sand in unmentionable places. Then our cat, Bovary, showed up making a horrible hacking sound, as she coughed up a hairball on my new lavender Egyptian cotton sheets. The little stinker just started purring and cleaning her fur again, as if she hadnât just intruded in the best dream Iâd had in forever.
Wait a minute. What was Bovary doing throwing up in my dream?
I shot up in bed, dislodging myself from Harryâs arm, fumbling for my glasses. âBovary! Iâm going to wring your neck!â
âWhatâs going on?â Harry was also sitting straight up in bed, looking for whatever intruder was in my room. Then he relaxed, seeing who it was, at least until he saw the nasty present on my side of the sheets. âThatâs disgusting, Bovary! No, donât you dare come over to me after what you just did!â
The gray menace that we both unfortunately adored was already crying as she rubbed up against Harryâs sheet-covered feet. Bovary loved me, as much as she could, but she was enamored with Harry. To my knowledge, she never threw up on Harryâs sheets.
I hit the alarm switch on my clock radio before the alarm could start blaring my favorite morning radio show, before running naked to the kitchen for a wad of paper towels. Shuddering, and trying hard not to gag, I scooped the hairball up, gingerly carrying it back to the kitchen and dumping it in the trash can.
I didnât care that I was going to get a shower in a few minutes. I scrubbed my hands like I was about to go into surgery. Bovary even got fresh food and water, although I was more than happy this morning that she only ate dry cat food. I donât think I could have handled another mushy heap this morning without tossing my cookies.
On the way back to my room, I saw that Harry had already stripped my bed and was spraying some pre-treater on the sheets before filling up the washing machine in our built-in wall laundry area. I didnât care about Harryâs family money, but I had to admit that some of the perks were quite nice.
When Harry followed me back into my bedroom, he helped me put my spare set of sheets back on the bed. Apparently I didnât tuck the top sheet in properly, so he redid it. Harryâs notorious tidiness was endearing when it wasnât irritating the crap out of me. I mean, the guy even pressed his blue jeans.
I didnât even bother waiting for the washing machine to finish. I thanked Harry for his help, turned down his offer to shower together, and pretended I didnât see his confusion and hurt. After all, I had classes and some more thinking to do. Oh, and some silent crying in the shower.
I powered through my busy day, which lasted until I ran into Jessica on my way to my last class.
